NEET Biology High-Weightage Chapters
Which NEET Biology chapters carry the most marks, how to prioritise Human Physiology, Genetics, Plant Physiology, Ecology, and more when time is limited, and where to start if Biology is dragging your mock score down.
Biology is 90 questions and 360 marks in NEET. That is half the paper. But not every chapter pulls equal weight. Some units show up again and again in past papers, map closely to NCERT, and reward focused reading plus MCQ practice. This page lists those chapters, suggests an order if you are short on time, and links to shorter guides for each major unit.

Why Biology weightage matters in NEET
Physics and Chemistry each have 45 questions. Biology has 90. A small improvement in Biology accuracy often moves your total score more than the same effort spread thin across all three subjects.
High-weightage chapters are not always the longest ones. They are the units that appear frequently in NEET and AIPMT papers, stay close to NCERT, and test application through MCQs rather than random facts from reference books.
Students scoring well in Biology usually sit above 80% accuracy in the subject. Many questions are NCERT-line based, so careful reading pays off directly. Weak Biology chapters also drag down full mocks even when Physics and Chemistry look fine on their own.
Highest-weightage NEET Biology chapters
Based on past paper frequency and syllabus weight, start with these six units. Each link below opens a focused prep guide.
- Human Physiology: Digestion, respiration, circulation, excretion, neural and endocrine control. Very high PYQ frequency. Often the biggest single chunk of Biology marks.
- Genetics and Evolution: Mendelian genetics, molecular basis of inheritance, evolution. Concept-heavy, but high return once basics click.
- Plant Physiology: Photosynthesis, respiration in plants, growth regulators. Often tested with diagrams and pathway comparisons.
- Ecology and Environment: Populations, ecosystems, biodiversity, pollution. Quick marks if NCERT terms are clear.
- Cell Structure and Function: Organelles, cell cycle, biomolecules. Foundation for Genetics and parts of Physiology.
- Reproduction: Human reproductive system, reproductive health, plant reproduction. Steady presence in NEET papers.
Also worth solid coverage: Biotechnology, Morphology and Anatomy of Plants, Structural Organisation in Animals, and Microbes in Human Welfare. But if time is tight, cover the six above first.
Suggested study order if time is limited
If you are starting late or revising in the final months, do not read Biology cover to cover without a plan. Use this order instead.
- 1. Human Physiology: Largest single chunk of repeatable marks.
- 2. Genetics and Evolution: High marks per hour once concepts settle.
- 3. Plant Physiology: Pairs well after Human Physiology because respiration and hormone ideas overlap.
- 4. Ecology: Faster to revise, good for score stability.
- 5. Cell Biology: Strengthens Genetics and Physiology understanding.
- 6. Reproduction: Moderate effort, consistent PYQ presence.
How to practice high-weightage chapters
Reading alone will not hold up in mocks. Use the same loop for each unit:
- Read the NCERT chapter once with diagrams and tables, not just highlighted text.
- Attempt 20 to 40 topic MCQs immediately. Use a timer if you can.
- Run PYQs for that chapter before jumping to the next unit.
- Bookmark wrong answers and revisit them in weekly revision.
- Track accuracy by chapter in Insights or your own notes.
For how chapter practice fits into full prep, see the NEET PYQ practice guide and mock test strategy pages.

Frequently asked questions
- Which is the most important Biology chapter for NEET?
- Human Physiology usually carries the highest question share in NEET Biology, followed by Genetics and Evolution. If you can only fix two units, start there.
- Is NCERT enough for NEET Biology high-weightage chapters?
- NCERT is the foundation, especially for Biology. You still need MCQ practice and PYQs on top to convert reading into exam-day accuracy.
- How long does it take to cover high-weightage Biology chapters?
- With focused daily study, most students can cover the six priority units in 6 to 10 weeks including practice. Revision and PYQ rounds add another 2 to 4 weeks, so start early enough before your mock phase gets intense.
